PREMIUM/CASUAL DINING

Shaping a distinctive music identity for Dishoom’s immersive restaurants

Dishoom has built an ultra loyal following by recreating the spirit of Bombay’s Irani cafés with warmth, energy and cultural depth. Shamil Thakrar, the co-founder, recognised music would play a central role in an experience where the detail of every touchpoint had been minutely considered. The curation needed to feel confident and transportive, drawing guests out of their day-to-day London into an immersive world that feels culturally vivid, highly social, and unmistakably Dishoom.

A soundtrack that brings Bombay to life

We defined a sound rooted in authentic influences, building a music identity which could be both unexpected and exuberant.

Drawing on obscure and much-loved Hindi film soundtracks, forgotten recordings and mid-century jazz, the music is built from deep, culturally informed research rather than obvious references. Anglo-Indian hybrids and 1950s exotica sit alongside rare archival finds, creating combinations that feel both authentic, fun and fresh. The sound of the brand is a big success and has been installed across their estate bringing consistency as it grows and goes international. As a spin off we compiled a vinyl LP entitled ‘Slip Disc: Dishoom’s Bombay London Grooves’ which lets loyal guests take a piece of the brand home.
